So I've been doing some thinking about what my theses question actually is. Obviously, it must contain something along the lines of "Is building a shipping container house in Kamloops a feasible alternative to standard construction". I would like to stay away from the cost perspective as much as possible, as costs vary too much to get an accurate estimate. However, I would like to include some points on the limitations, advantages and disadvantages on shipping container houses.
Hows this: "Is building a shipping container home in Kamloops a feasible alternative to standard construction, while keeping in mind all the limitations in design and the (dis)/advantages that come with them?"
Comments? Questions?
I saw a news article recently about Big Steel Box and how they are being asked by clients to modify their containers to be used as offices, etc. You might want to contact them about the availability of the shipping containers and try to get a rough estimate of cost.

Thanks Dale, ill look into that!
DeleteIve always been interested in this topic, I think your thesis question is pretty good. In my opinion its a %100 percent feasible because its all about recycling and reusing. One aspect of this type of construction I see being a problem is with any new type of construction is how its perceived by the public and J.H.A. New ideas always seem to be accompanied by doubt, maybe try exploring any negatives of this type of construction and providing solutions to make this a more main stream and accepted idea. Just an idea Paul, cant wait to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pointers Darren, you make a good point about providing solutions.
DeleteTheres a company in Wistler that is making cottages out of recycled shipping containers... check it out.

That's a good question. It seems that the climate in Kamloops is accommodating to a vast number of housing styles so I don't know why not shipping container houses. One of the main reasons why it isn't seen in Kamloops is lack of knowledge? A public survey or even just around campus might be useful.
